Just like he has done so many times before, Rodney Colley took some time out of his night to cut his toenails.
As he cut, the 23-year-old realized that his right big toe had something that looked like a hangnail and attempted to rip it off. It didn’t seem to cause any problems at first, but all of that quickly changed. Roughly four days later, Rodney’s toenail became infected. After trying to remedy the problem on his own, he sought the help of a doctor.
As it turns out, Rodney has been cutting his toenails wrong this whole time…
Instead of using clippers like this:
Rodney should have been using clippers with a “straight edge”, so that the toenail remains straight across instead of curved.
Because he was rounding the edges of his toenails, the hangnail he was trying to rip off was actually a part of an ingrown toenail, which is basically a “knick in the nail”.
Rodney tells Independent Journal Review that the doctors ended up having to remove half of his toenail.
“Basically he gave me a tetanus shot,” he says. “Then he gave me two numbing shots, one on each side of my toe. After he cleaned off my toe with an antiseptic, man, he put that needle in my toe and I started squirming. It hurt so bad.”
“He pulled out these tools that looked like a torture device, and just grabbed on to my nail and started cutting. Then he yanked it clean out.”
The pain of having his toenail removed was some of the worst pain he has ever experienced, in fact, Rodney has vowed to never cut his own nails again.

He adds, “I’m sticking to pedicures from now on. I’m 23 years old and I never want to cut my own toenails again.”
